Passiflora coriacea, the leather-like Passion Flower (Latin coriacea = „like leather“), is named after its foliage. The leaves are relatively thick anf feel like leather. they are wider than high, and the leaf stems originate in the center of the leaf, unlike with most Passiflora species. The foliage is variegated and due to its unusual shape an eye-catcher.
Passiflora coriacea belongs to the subgenus decaloba in the section cieca. It has relatively small flowers, having a diameter of less than 3 cm. The petals are greenish-white, the corona is yellow at the top, brown at the bottom towards the center of the flower.
My coriacea plants bloom often, also in the wintertime, and constantly. Buds develop in clusters, opening in short sequence. This Passi is very resistant to any kind of pest. I never saw spider mites on a Passiflora coriacea.
In my opinion, P. coriacea is a decorative, easy-care Passion Flower that I would recommend to beginners, as well.
